Henry Purcell – the pop-star of the 1690s
In this edition of Club9 (live on April 16, 2026 on Freies Radio Salzkammergut), we turn to Henry Purcell — composer of the late 17th century, and in many ways the Hans Zimmer of his time: widely present, emotionally direct, and deeply influential. One could even say — a pop star of the 1690s.
We explore Purcell’s world, his historical context, and the clarity and expressive power of his music, which continues to resonate today — on stage, in film, and in concert halls.
The program moves between original performances on historical instruments and a wide range of reinterpretations: from Thomas Dunford & Lea Desandre and Collegium Musicum 90 to crossover approaches by artists such as Jakob Józef Orliński, Sting, Hayato Sumino, Bjarte Eike & Barokksolistene, and Christina Pluhar with L’Arpeggiata and Philipp Jaroussky.
We also listen to Dario Marianelli’s hommage to Purcell in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice, tracing how his musical language continues to shape contemporary sound worlds.
Finally, we feature If Music Be The Food of Love by the Austrian trio AEON, who present English song repertoire from Dowland to Britten and performed in Bad Ischl the day following the broadcast.
A listening session across centuries — between past and present, original and reinterpretation.
